“The Wife of Blue Beard”
I grew up reading the French fairytale of “Blue Beard” on which this project is based. In my retelling, I frame the violent, misogynistic story through a queer, feminist lens. Digitally illustrated with a blend of classic and modern styles, this project challenges the sexism woven into traditional fairytales and the contemporary media young girls consume.
By rewriting the narrative, I reclaim the story as one of agency, survival, and empowerment—something I would have wanted to read as a child. This work is both a critique and an invitation, asking viewers to reconsider the stories we inherit and the ones we choose to tell next.
Digitally illustrated and designed. Printed, binded, and embroidered by hand.
